Background
Each paranormal investigation will definitely either be successful or not in documenting any evidence of spirit activities. However, there is no rating standard which has been set by any paranormal club as reference to determine how successful a paranormal investigation ought to be. At the most, the success is only rated in words such as bad, good, great and so on. Hence, the Malaysian Ghost Research has invented three formulas to calculate the success level of a paranormal investigation.
In fact, in order to measure investigation success we need to see how much evidences we have documented within a paranormal investigation time duration. Furthermore, scientific measures will be able to tells us exactly the success level of an investigation based on scientific calculation.
Why need we rate our paranormal investigation?
Since the paranormal field is a part of science that has always been referred to as para science therefore we need an index standard as a guide to rate investigation success. Which means, we have to set a standard guide to measure how well the investigation has achieved its goal.
In fact, when we compare and measure a paranormal investigation, not only will we be able to see the actual goals that have been achieved in an investigation but also we can predict other factors that may contribute to the success of the investigation mentioned. Furthermore, in the long run we will be able to gather more information related to the actual factors which brings significant impact on ghost hunting.
What is the Paranormal Investigation Achievement Rating Standard - PiARS?

The Paranormal Investigation Achievement Rating Standard (PiARS) is a set of standards set by the Malaysian Ghost Research to determine the success level of a paranormal investigation. This Paranormal Investigation Achievement Rating Standard - PiARS would be used to determine the success of their future paranormal and ghost research and also to share it with other paranormal clubs. The PiARS rating standard is shown in the table below.
How to use the PiARS?
The PiARS only can be used to determine paranormal investigation success if related data input had been recorded properly. Furthermore, the PiARS only sets to determine paranormal investigation success using common tools which were used to record spirit activities in the form of EVPs, still photos and videos.
Therefore, the PiARS may not be applied to determine paranormal investigation success for investigation that has not collected paranormal evidence using a video camera, voice recorder or camera for still photos.
PiARS disadvantages and limitations.
The PiARS index should only be used to determine paranormal investigations that have valid evidence that can either be counted physically or referred to as one unit for mathematical calculation, eg. 1 image in a video clip segment etc.
The benefit of using the PiARS
The benefit of using this index is, we would then know the actual success of our investigation that not only scientifically can be used to determine other factors that may have contributed to the investigation success, but it also can be used as scientific evidence.
Background
The video camera is a common tool that has been widely used in paranormal investigations, yet no formula had been forwarded by any paranormal clubs to determine the success of a paranormal investigation based on video recording evidence.
In fact, success in documenting a full ghost apparition on video recording scientifically cannot be used as evidence that the certain investigation has met with great success without any index for a reference to determine its rating.
Data collection
To collect data for the purpose of giving the PiARSve in paranormal investigations using a video camera, a researcher must:
1. Determine the actual start and end time of an investigation by referring to a time stamp that is printed on the video screen during playback and not according to the time the researcher reached the field investigation.
2. Determine the length of an investigation in minutes.
3. Extract paranormal images from a video frame.
4. Determine the image total of all segments from a paranormal visual.
5. Determine the maximum amount of a paranormal images that have been extracted from a video frame in a segment. Every segment equals to one minute based on our experience that paranormal events that are mostly recorded on video range from one to the maximum of twenty seconds. Therefore, one minute in a segment is sufficient to determine the maximum amount of a paranormal images in a segment.

Still photos are the most common evidence of spirit activities. Therefore, based on the number of photos that have been captured in an investigation, the PiARSve can be used to measure the success of an investigation to determine how far the investigation has achieved its goal.
Data Collection.
To collect data for the purpose of giving the PiARSpe in a paranormal investigation using still photos, a researcher must:
1. Determine the actual start and end time of an investigation by referring to a time stamp that is printed on the first photo captured and the last photo captured, whether it had recorded any paranormal activities or not.
2. Determine the length of an investigation in minutes.
3. Determine the total number of still photos that can be considered to have captured images of the paranormal only. Photos which have not captured any paranormal images cannot be considered as proof.

Background
An investigation based on EVP also can be measured using a scientific formula. Similar to video recording, EVPs captured on voice recorder will fill up a certain amount of time frames. Basically, EVPs recorded on voice recorder will take a time frame of two to ten seconds that is filled up with paranormal voices. Therefore, a segment of EVPs is equal to a one-minute time frame of a paranormal audio recording. Since most of the time in a segment only one EVP is recorded, therefore the calculation will not include standard mean calculation.
Data Collection.
To collect data for the purpose of the PiARSpe in paranormal investigations using EVP evidence, a researcher must:
1. Determine the actual start and end time of an investigation by referring to a time stamp that is printed on the screen of a digital voice recorder during playback, or take note of the moment the EVP recording start or end.
2. Determine the length of an investigation in minutes.
3. Determine the total amount of EVPs that can be considered to have distinct ghost voices or after the voices have been boosted.
